Hal’s method utilizes the Select and Mask feature in Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 or 2019. It is great for a fast cutout – especially if it will be small on a page like a headshot or folio – because the quality doesn’t matter so much when it’s that small. And, you could always start with using this method and clean it up later.
It is also especially useful for frizzy, fluffy, or curly hair. I’ve used it before to edit the hair with this method and the Pen Tool method for the rest of the image.
